Traineeship program now available

In addition to our existing, flexible delivery study options, Polytechnic West now offers the Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety through traineeship studies.
This new study mode, and its associated federal incentive scheme, is available for:
  • new worker trainees
  • existing worker trainees (funded under the higher level qualifications for existing worker program)
  • government workers

How long does the traineeship run for?

The nominal duration of the course is 24 months however, students can complete the qualification earlier, depending on their progress.
There are nine units of study in the Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety; you enrol and pay as you go.

What workplaces are eligible for the traineeship?

In order to provide a traineeship in the Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety, workplaces need to employ a responsible person to mentor the trainee.
This person must have skills and experience in OHS and, while qualifications in OHS are highly regarded, they are not mandatory.

What skills are needed to complete the course?

Students must have access to a computer and be able to use programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel. Access to the internet and an active email account are also required.

Is recognition of prior learning available?

Yes! If you have existing skills, knowledge and experience but not the formal qualification, recognition of prior learning (RPL) may be the answer for you.
RPL involves the assessment of previously unrecognised skills and knowledge achieved outside of the formal education and training system.
