Bachelor of Science (Health, Safety & Environment) Course code: 311344
The BSc (Health, Safety & Environment) is a new course that combines two previous Curtin programs, the BSc (Environmental Health) and the BSc (Health & Safety). This new course is designed to broaden the employment opportunities for students in the rapidly expanding area of health, safety and environment, while still allowing students to select a major in either ‘Environmental Health’ or ‘Health & Safety’. There is currently an extremely high demand for graduates, who are receiving well above average salaries.

Duration and Availability
The course is available both internally and externally (online). The course is normally completed over three year’s full-time study, or the equivalent part-time study.

Further study
An honors year program is available to enable students to extend their knowledge of current academic research and methodology. The program includes a supervised research project and the preparation of a dissertation. Both majors also provide an ideal grounding for postgraduate studies in related and non-related fields of study. Higher degree courses to a Masters and PhD level are also available.

Bachelor of Health Science (K97): Advanced Standing

Advanced Standing is the granting of credit towards completion of an ECU course based on two broad types of experience:
  • credentialed experience– learning gained through formal education or training with a recognised post-secondary institution, training provider or accredited professional body;
  • uncredentialed experience – learning gained outside the formal education and training system through work, life and other practical experience.
To considered for advanced standing, students must be enrolled in the Bachelor of Health Science and must complete the Application for Advanced Standing located at:

For example, students with a recognised completed TAFE Diploma or Advanced Diploma of Occupational Safety and Health may be granted Advanced Standing within the Bachelor of Health Science (K97).

Students who have completed an Advanced Diploma in OSH should apply for advanced standing for the following 6 units (90 credit points):
HST1152 Introduction to Occupational Health and Safety (15 credit points);
HST1154 Occupational Health and Safety Law (15 credit points);
HST2145 Risk Management (15 credit points);
HST1121 Personal Health (15 credit points); and
Two level 2 or level 3 electives (30 credit points).

Students who have completed a Diploma in OSH should apply for advanced standing for the following 4 units (60 credit points):
HST1152 Introduction to Occupational Health and Safety (15 credit points);
HST1154 Occupational Health and Safety Law (15 credit points); and
Two level 2 or level 3 electives (30 credit points).
